In the harsh economic times of the early Depression, films and performers often featured an alienated, cynical, and socially dangerous comic style. The appearance of homosexual characters was at its height in 1933; in that year, Hays declared that all gay male characters would be removed from pictures. The 1950s brought the first signs of its demise in the form of court cases and new foreign movies that were not bossed around by the PCA.
